"My Greatest Hero"
by Jennifer
When you ask yourself what makes a hero, do you even think about the heroes that we see every day, the people who can really change another's life in a positive way? When we think about heroes, do we think of people who helped in cases such as September 11th? To me, a hero doesn't have to be famous, just someone who teaches us things every day about anything. In some cases, heroes can teach us something as deep as the meaning of life or how to move on after a tragedy, or even something as simple as how to learn to forgive and forget by always loving life while you are living it. I have many heroes who help me grow all the time. A hero is there also to help you in situations that will come up in your lifetime and that can be there for you in every way. Many people that I love and care about are my heroes because they do not only love and support me but they can give me their valuable opinions and great advice. Whenever I need an opinion that I can trust to be the truth, I always ask my mom or dad because they would never lie to me about my work. Everyone should have a hero. I believe that in some way, every person is a hero to someone else.
My hero would have to be my father, Brian McPhillips. He is a family doctor who works extremely hard every day to cure people of all ages. Some days, he is so busy that he even skips lunch and does not eat his dinner until eight o'clock. Sometimes, my dad even does house calls. He even gets up in the middle of the night to go to the hospital to deliver babies! Sometimes my dad brings his charts home and finishes them late at night so that he can see us before we all go to sleep. If he had a choice, I know that he would to stay home all day and play golf and sail on our boat. Unfortunately, this is not an option for him because he works so that he can support our family and so that we can do fun things together like take a vacation or have a boat that we can all enjoy together. Even though we do not get to spend as much time with him as we may want, we enjoy the time we do spend together very much. Quality is better than quantity.
It is obvious that my dad loves his family very much and that he tries his best to do things with us. One of the reasons that I have come to love and respect my dad so much is that he always has the ability to not yell when he gets angry. I especially like this about him because he has to work all day and deal with a lot of cranky patients but yet he manages not to get cranky, or at least not express it to us and make us upset. A typical U.S. citizen works about forty hours a week. My dad works sixty hours on a good week and on a week when he has to work weekends, he works about seventy-five hours. That is almost twice the amount of most citizens! I guess what I am trying to say is that he has definitely one of the most difficult and time consuming jobs you can have and he is still happy and kind even though he may be tired, cranky, busy, and overworked.
When we think of the word "hero" we sometimes only think of firefighters rescuing people from burning buildings. However, I think that a person can be a hero by doing his or her job and being a good example to their children. My father is my hero because everyday, he works incredibly hard taking care of other people and I am able to talk to him and let him help me with problems I may be having. My father is responsible for keeping thousands of people healthy, which is a pretty important thing. Everyone should have one shining star of a role model that supports them throughout their life and who is there for them to talk to and my dad is mine. Thank you, dad, because I love you, and because I am very proud to be your daughter.
