"Too Much Can Hurt"
By Bradley

“Don’t do it! Noooo! Look Out!” Lisa screamed as she covered her eyes.
“What is it? What’s the matter? Are you alright Lisa?”
“I’m fine mom,” Lisa answered sounding annoyed. “I am just watching my favorite scary movie. You know, the one where the monster could be anything and before you find out it eats you alive?”
“No, I don’t know! I want you to stop watching all these scary movies. Sooner or later you’re gonna’ regret you packed all that useless junk into your mind.”
“Whatever mom. I’ve been watching tons of scary movies all my life; look at me, I’m just fine. Anyway, shhh!”
“I want you to turn that off in ten minutes and go to bed. You have school tomorrow. Do not stay up late! You hear me?”
“Yeah, yeah, whatever you say. G’night mom,” Lisa replied carelessly.
Ten minutes later, Lisa did what her mom said. She walked wearily toward her room through the dark hall. A throbbing pound began abruptly from the other end. After hearing it, Lisa began to conclude pessimistically, “It’s a creature waiting to eat me. No, it’s giant bug waiting to be released so it can attack me.” She quickly ran into her room, but her curiosity got the best of her. The excited, yet frightened girl grabbed a baseball bat from under her bed. She cautiously walked out into the hall with the aluminum object ready to swing. Lisa’s mind went crazy with anticipation.
“Owww!” She suddenly screamed. “I wish that little brat would pick up his toys! I almost twisted my ankle.”
After Lisa shrieked, the noise stopped, and so did she. The injured girl was now sitting on the floor rubbing her toes. The sound of a slamming door interrupted her concentration from her foot. Footsteps lightly echoed through the hall into Lisa’s ears. She hurriedly got up, put her back against the wall, and began to slowly scoot along it. She reached her little brother’s room and went in, then quietly closed the door. Lisa turned on a lamp so she could make her way through the messy maze of toys that lay on the floor.
“Matt, get up,” she whispered. “I don’t think we’re safe. We need to get to mom’s room fast. Come on, hurry.”
Lisa and her little brother walked toward the door when they heard a whaling sound come from the hallway.
“Oh, no! We’re trapped! Mom! Help us! Mom!” Lisa cried.
“She can’t hear us,” Matt commented.
“What do you mean? How do you know?”
“She can’t hear us because…”
“Because why!”
“Because she’s in the house.”
“What do you mean she’s in the house?”
“Look for yourself,” he pointed up.
Lisa glanced above her brother’s walls to find what looked like her living room on the other side of a wide, bubbly glass.
“What’s going on? Wait, we’re in the TV aren’t we? That’s why I see our living room looks through that window, or should I say television screen.”
“No, you are in the TV,” her brother replied, suddenly changing into the monster from her movie.
“Noooo! Don’t ea-“ she pleaded but couldn’t finish.
“It’s okay. Everything is okay. Clam Down.” Lisa opened her eyes to find herself in the dark living room and her mom with her hand on her shoulder. “You were having a nightmare, those dumb horror movies.”
“Mom, you were right! I just had the most horrible dream. I will never watch a scary movie again, I promise.”
“It’s okay honey, it’s okay,” her mom said in a comforting manner as they hugged one another. “I am starving, especially since I didn’t get any dinner.”
“What? You did eat dinner. I watched you, and what is this big bump on your back?” Lisa asked while pulling away from her mother’s arms. She turned a light on so she could see. “You're not mom!”
